Squeal When Releasing Brake

Hi, I have 02 Corolla 58K and recently I started noticing an occassional squeal when releasing the brake. I traced the sound to right-rear brake (I can make the sound happen when releasing the parking brake).

So first I though about dismantling the brake but I could not even take out the brake drum. The drum has 2 screw holes and I think you are supposed to put in a nut and tighten it to push the drum out? Last I checked the Toyota documentation I didn't find anything specific regadring this .. even what is the size of the nut .. metric or SAE.

I looked up some articles which indicated that the rear brakes are driven by a wire right .. so could it be that the wire needs to be greased. If so is there usually a hole to force the grease in? Any advice in this regard would be helpful.

Thanks in advance

I'm guessing that you have the original rear brake shoes on the car. The drums are probably rusted on. They should be able to be removed by hand, a puller is not normally needed. The brakes are only actuated by a cable when the parking brake is used. Normally they are hydraulically actuated using brake fluid.

The squeal may be coming from the normal contact points of the shoe against the backing plate so when you brake, the shoes move slightly and they squeak. The contact points are usually lightly lubricated with a grease, (I've been using waterproof) that has probably been washed off and rust has formed on the surfaces.

If you don't know exactly what you are doing, as this is an extremely important safety issue when disassembling and reassembling, I would strongly suggest you take your car into the Toyota dealer and have them diagnose and repair the problem.
