What would cause an alternator in a 1989 Camry to spark?

Was driving one day and the car stalled out. Was able to restart it and get home, but it wouldn't start again after that. Was able to jump it, but noticed sparks and smoke coming out of the alternator. What would cause this. I've read that the brushes wearing out is a common ailment, but would sparking occur if this were the case. Thanks!

Worn brushes can cause sparks and smoke, as can improper jump start procedures and a cheap alternator.
