Yaris in the snow...

In forty years of driving we have never driven a car that is as bad in the snow as our 2006 Yaris Hatchback. We went out and bought snow tires today, hopefully that will help. But the dealership told us not to use rims larger than 14 inches for the 2006 hatchback. That sucks.

The car is too light, and too close to the ground, to be a wise choice for the country roads in Ontario, at least this year...

cordially, as always,

rm

Why should it suck?

You bought a Toyota Yaris to use in Ontario Canada? That was your first mistake. I own one and it works like a charm here in Dallas. Of course, we have frozen precip once a year... You picked the wrong place. A Ford Escape Hybrid would have been a better option for a place where it snows as much.

Remember, the snow tires go on the front, not the back. 8)

Actually, the snow tires go on all four wheels. It is as important to be able to stop as it is to go.

oversteer anyone?

no reputable tire store would put 2 winter tires onto the front of a FWD vehicle. they'd have you buy 4 tires.

And what if you only had money for two tires or were unwilling to buy four?

Speaking of driving in the snow, I've owned lots of Toyotas and sever

4WD trucks, howeve, the best performers in snow and mud were my VW bugs. They would go anwhere (until they got high centered, of course!). jor

You don't mix tire types unless you're stupid, especially in areas where snow is a constant issue. You buy 4 tires. End of story.

Mixed tire types can ****SOMETIMES**** cause a car to act in ways that

****SOME**** drivers are not equipped to deal with. Find a way to afford four.

I am glad you have extra money. In real life, not everyone does. Unfortunately, the way some people find extra money is to not eat for a while.

I understand that. I was that away a few years ago right after my divorce. Some people also don't think ahead months or years for the things they know they'll need to buy. The OP is not in this situation, though.

Then you're SOL. Les Schwab (popular chain on the W. Coast) will not do anything that could be a liability for them. You either pay for 4 or they will not do the work or even sell you the tires. Same for getting brake work done which is why it's a little more spendy. They use all new/refurb parts -- they do not use any of your existing parts that're normally replaced.

And then some people can't seem to think ahead more than an hour or two. This is what keeps 7-11 stores in business. If you have the ability to think ahead (to the next payday, next rent payment, etc.) you won't be running out of milk, bread or cigarettes at 10:30 PM and having to go to a convenience store and paying a premium for your lack of planning ahead. It's a classic sign of those who need public assistance. I might add that these are also the people who drive to the post office in their bathrobes to mail in their tax returns at 11 PM on April 15th. They seem to always be a day late and a dollar short.

It must be much lighter than my Echo (Yaris in Europe was the Echo prototype, for those who don't know).

I bought my 2000 Echo in Vermont, and lived in New Hampshire at the time - that car made it through horrible snow many times, without (unexpected)incident. Guess they spared the weight on the U.S./Canadian Yaris. Did you drive a very large vehicle right before your Yaris?

Yeah, but you are a goddess. Have you forgotten?

It may be all in the tires. With the tires that come on Corollas (Integras, last I knew - in '98 & '04, at any rate), they are terrible in the snow. Switching to an all-weather radial which is rated very good/excellent for snow makes a huge difference, IME.
