99 corolla engine lockup

Hi Found a 99 corolla with 1.8 engine - havent heard of this motor having engine supposedly frozen up. Wonder if its worth picking up - its cheap and has 80K original miles. Any thoughts are appreciated. thanx, ignatz

Hey ignatz, you are going to have to clarify your statement here, its a little confusing. Are you asking whether anyone has heard of 99 corollas seizing up, or saying that it is and you need to know why? Kinda confusing.

IMO, any car with a frozen engine is not worth more than what a junk yard will pay for it. And a junk yard will make a profit from selling the parts like seats, compressor, alternator, etc but you have to spend more to fix it.

A frozen engine means lack of care or a major mechanical defect in the powertrain (incl transmission). There is a chance you have to swap the engine/tranny out. But if everything else is in good shape (can be very hard to make sure), you may be able to swap the motor, rebuild the tranny and run it. Even a junk yard motor/tranny can carry a 1 to

3 month warranty if you go that route and tag another $1000 for both.

The 2.2L and the 3.0L were the ones seizing up from engine sludge. Don't think the 1.8L has that problem -- must have smart owners who change oils on time, unlike owners of Camrys and Lexus. ;)
