2002 SE V6 80kmi FUEL Consumption

Dec 02, 2006 4 Replies

I used to get 25-27 mpg (80-90% highway). Sometime in September I used a Gumout Fuel Cleaner and since then I get 20-21 mpg. I used to easily get

400-420 mile on a full tank, but after Gumout product I'm lucky when I get
350, but ussully it's ~310-320. I live in NE, but I have used Air Conditioner since April-May.

My comute hasn't changed, same 80-90% of highway. I've been using the same oil and filter (Pennozil Platinum) since I owned this car and my tires are always properly inflated. I was never attached to a particular gas station, but I always avoid cheaper ones (wawa, valero or somehtng). I've been using

93 for the last 15 years.

What could have happend? What can be done? Car has not had any repars done since March (EGR Valve).

Thanks.

Correction - I change my oil every 5kmi. Also, it seems like I'm getting not

20-21mpg now, but more like 17-18. I used to get 25-27, because at that time I used to check it every time I filled it up.

Perhaps you should have used fuel injector cleaner. Carburetor cleaner is a different chemical. It might have clogged an injector by loosening debris in the fuel line or affected your oxygen sensors.

Oxygen sensors are very sensitive to some chemicals, so read the can instructions carefully.

In any case, get a diagnostic readout. Some parts stores like AutoZone will do it for free.

The new winter gas formulas can effect your gas milage You need to have someonr look at it with computer to read fuel trims

Can you provide more details? Will $200 computers from PepBoys tell me that?

Thanks.
