I just found out that the cabin air filter element costs over $20 at the dealer, twice as expensive as the engine air filter! Are there any cheap third party equivalents?

Really? For my 2003 Corolla, I paid $17 for the cabin filter and $14 for the engine filter .... from my Toyota dealer. The cabin filter in your Camry is one inch longer but the same width and is a fibrous material instead of paper. Look in a Purolator filter book and you will find a part number for your cabin filter. Comparably priced? I don't know. You can blow out your fibrous cabin filter a time or two. My paper filter is not really cleanable.
