95 Camry 4 cyl AutoTrans won't shift into over drive when cold

The car runs perfectly but I notice in the fall and winter for the first mile or so before the temperature guage comes off the peg, the tranny won't shift into over drive. Once it warms up a bit and the temp guage comes off the peg, everything is fine. In the summer, it shifts into over drive from the get go even before the temp guage comes off the peg.

I'm guessing this may be a normal part of the way the electronics is controlling it. Is this a normal feature of the design of the electronic controls or does it have to do with the tranny oil warming up?

thanks Mark

Hey, thanks for answering this folks. I've been wondering about this very thing on my own '95. And now it all makes sense. As a footnote, the dealer suggested a "soft rebuild" as a $olution. They also suggested a new set of rear struts when just replacing the stabilizer bar bushings solved that (rattle and roughness) problem ..thanks again to this Newsgroup! Jack
