AC noise

Jul 01, 2003 1 Replies

My 1995 Camry LE 4-cyl auto with 87,000 miles has started making a noise when AC is started. The noise is of a GRRR-GRRR-GRRR type, and is most easily heard just after I start engine and then turn AC on. Noise is not noticeable in normal driving. Any suggestion to its cause and how to fix it? Possible cost to fix it? Thanks.

DO check the drive belt tension. When the belt loosens too much, it will vibrate wildly at idle with the A/C engaged. ON THE OTHER HAND.... if the drive belt is over tightened, the compressor can start growling a lot at idle. So... the *right* amount of tension is key. ;^)
