Air/Fuel Sensor update

Posted previously about '03 LE with 9K having a failed Air Fuel mix sensor.

Covered under warranty but has been a circus. Took about 10 days to get the first replacement sensor. toyota installed it and everything went haywire.

They kept car for extra day and they finally decided it was a bad sensor. Ordered another one....took a week to get it. They installed it and it all went screwy again. More time on the phone between toyota dealer and some "mystical toyota experts sitting on pillows in a far-off land."

They finally decided that my Camry, which was produced in June 03 used a different sensor than that that is specified in the parts catalog, even if they pull up that part via VIN number. So, anyone in a similar situation might want to be aware of this little glitch. Cheers, tim

Hmmm! Thank you for relaying the outcome. Wonder if there is a distinction between Japanense and US built Camry in this respect? You know, the old disclaimer "We reserve the right to make modifications without warning."

This is a Japan-built car. I had the same problem with an '84 Tercel that I bought new. It was one of the last cars produced for that model year....the dealer told me that when I took delivery. It had a mix of '84 and '85 parts that caused some confusion at times....

Verrrrrrry interesting! By now you may have read about the operational and structural differences between an Air Fuel Ratio sensor located ahead of the catalyst vs the O2 sensor located after the catalyst in very OBD-II smog systems. Toyota and especially some parts catalogs have been a bit sloppy about interchanging A/F with O2 sensors in their nomenclature, leading to a bit of confusion.
