Center console armrest surprise

FYI

I have a 96 Camry LE with the padded armrest on the console. The vinyl on the armrest has started to crack, so I decided to head to the junkyard to find a better one. Before I left, I looked at my armrest to see how to remove it. It is attached with some clips, so all I had to do was grab the bottom edges and spread them to remove the cover. What I found underneath the padded armrest was an unpadded armrest that was in perfect condition. Toyota must have just added the padded armrest on top of the base model for the LE. No need for a new armrest, I'll just stay with the "brand new" base one.

I ran into a similar situation about 20 years ago on a Monte Carlo. It had ripped vinyl seats and I found brand new, perfectly preserved cloth seats underneath the vinyl cover.

Who would have known???

Was your car from Southeast distributor? They do all kinds of modifications (at extra cost on the sticker) at the port. Including distributor installed leather seating, armrests, etc.

I purchased my car new from a dealer in Minnesota. I don't know whether it was part of their normal factory allocation or was obtained from another dealer somewhere else in the country.
