is it normal for a drive shaft to feel loose?

1991 Camry, auto, 4 cyl. About half a year ago both of the drive shafts were replaced. Recently I can hear muffled knocks when the car is moving slowly. It seems to be coming from the front. I thought it was my old tires, so I replaced all of them, but the same problem remains. I noticed that the driver side shaft has some degree of play, when pushed sideways (left/right). The passenger side shaft does not move at all. I showed it to the mechanic and he said that this is not the problem, and blamed it on my struts. I am going to change my struts, but I do not think that this is the problem, because the knock is constant even on a completely flat road.
