I would have guessed at this reality. I had my timing belt changed @
120,000 km since last change (as I should have) at a Toyota dealer here. They do it for about $200.00. However, hours after I drop off the car I get the up-sale call.Mr. Cowie... Your car needs the oil pan gasket changed, the distributor gasket changed and the valve cover gasket changed. While you are at it you should get your water pump changed, cam seals changed, we must replace your tensioner spring and we will need to re-set your timing. Been here before and was ready... I ask them how much is the final amount... Oh about $1,400.00.
The car doesn't use any oil between changes and doesn't smell or produce oily smoke so NO gaskets. The water pump was done last timing belt change so no water pump. I can easily do timing so...
I have the belt, cam seals and tensioner spring done for $250.00 and Ta-Da good until the 550,000 km mark.
Bottom Line listen to what they say but have your BS detectors tuned up.
