This could be caused by the Air Conditioner compressor (it is a piston type). Do you get the sound with the A-C turned off?

Funny you should mention this Phil,...my AC comp made a noise exactly like a rooted rod bearing. Cost $650 for a new comp, reconned ones were $550. Once off the car, you could turn the comp freely till it hit something inside and bound-up. I didnt ask for it to be stripped and I didnt take it with me. What gives when they do this?

Is this a manual transmission car? I know it is unlikely it is, but I have a noise that sounds like a piston slap and it is coming from the clutch or trasmission when idling. If this is the case for you, it is no bid deal.
