Getting an owners manual will help you. About every 30,000 miles is fine, do not forget this: the 4 cyclinder has a seperate differential that uses trans fluid that needs to be changed at the same time. Most everyone forgets to do it. Unless you specifically tell them to change it you can bet it does not get done.

Here's my non-scientific method. Pull the transmission dip stick, let a drop of fluid fall onto a white paper towel. Compare to new fluid. the ideal would be to change the fluid enough that it doesn't darken. bear in mind, changing the fluid only removes a portion, so you might have to do this several times at first.

The 1992 - 1996 is like this - double check for the '99, may be different. On mine, there is a warning label on the transmission dip stick.

IF you are doing the Trani-oil change i suggest you go to a toyota delaer, since toyota uses a specific grade of oil for their transmissions and usualy they change once every 2 years or 45000 miles. And remember that toyota trnsmissions usualy come with a life time transmission filter on most of the carolla and camrys, so you dont have to replace them. and along with the transmission there is a differential that needs to be serviced and only toyota delers do a better job or trained to service them.

Once every 100,000 miles i suggest you do a complete FLUSH & FILL, and again do this only in a toyota dealer ship, this will save you from a lot of other problems.
