[urgent question]

I am a Camry owner and am in the process of buying another, used. I belatedly ran a CARFAX report on the one I put a deposite on, and the report gives me cause for concern for 2 reasons:

-It was originally a rental car.[at a major but unspecified, company]

- It was racking up high milage for couple years (about 40K in 2 years), but then supposedly it increased only another 14K miles over the next couple years.

Should I assume that rental companies are good about basic maintanance? Do they perhaps have their own repair arrangments and not report to DMV?

Most importantly, does 14K miles in about 5 years sound plausible???

Who owned the car during those five years? The rental company may not use an older car as much. My dad once bought a car from Avis and had no problems with it. The rental company was probably very good about routine maintenence - they generally are. They don't need a car breaking down on a customer. If the car hasn't been repainted, look very closely for scratches, especially on top (from briefcases), and around key holes on the doors and the trunk.

Rental cars are put through hell. Then only thing worse is buying a police car. I am sure there are plenty of other camrys for sale in your area. Why not look elsewhere?

LOL. ANYBODY viewing a few episodes of COPS can figure out police cars have a MUCH more stressed existance than rental cars. Imagine rentals having been driven only by teenagers. ;-) Rest assured though ... the engine will have been broken in "properly."

They probably turned the milage back, get your money back and call the states atty. A normal scam that costs consumers

If someone knows what they are doing and does not get too greedy, that can be hard to prove.
