I have a 1981 Toyota Pickup, that backfires thru the exhaust when it is just below normal operating temperature, (Timing checks good,new spark plug/wires etc). like to know what could be the problem?

When does this happen ? Sitting still, truck moving ? If when moving, light throttle or under a load ? How does it act when cold or fully warmed up ? Did the backfiring occur before the new plugs and wires. Did it start suddenly or gradually get worse? How does it run otherwise ? When was the last time the valves were adjusted ?
