I recently bought an 87 4runner 22re A/T very cheap with a starter problem. I noticed 1/4 shims on the starter. The flywheel looked bad and I'm 1/2 into changing it. Between the bolts and the flywheel is this 1/4 thick ring that looks to be for securing the flywheel. My question is; Is this ring supposed to go between the crank and the flywheel? It's exactly the same thickness of the shims. BTW, without the shims the starter never completely disengages. I have 2 manuals both of which show the manual transmission, but not the AT.
