1989 Toy - starter/solenoid issue?

Group,

my Son has a 1989 Toyota pickup, 4cyl, carb.

2WD, 4spd. Truck has about 150K miles. The starter was replaced about 15K miles ago.

When my Son starts up the vehicle, the starter continues to run. Even with the key shutoff and pulled from the ignition. We have to disconnect the battery to get the starter to shutoff.

With this model, is the solenoid built onto the starter? If so, does this sound like the issue is with the starter? or is there a relay switch somewhere that needs to be looked at?

thanx,

-g

Yes, the solenoid is part of the starter. There may or may not be a relay. Check to see if there is power to the solenoid with the key off (and the starter running). If it is an intermittent problem, you could run a wire to the solenoid back to a small

12V bulb or LED and then the bulb will light when the solenoid has power to it. Could be the solenoid sticking due to a number of factors. By "starter was replaced" I assume this was a rebuilt unit? If so, open it up, give it a good once over and look for anything amiss. Not uncommon for a "rebuilt" starter to have problems:
