Without shouting my answer, time to stick in a 1UZE motor. You wont regret that swap.
Not sure why you are sending me to a parts store i am 5k into this car is it worth it. The od on the car is 12000 dont ask i dont know why. I did not get the history of the car with the car. The engine is the 3.0 3vze. If anyone missed the question with the caps locks on (sorry) IS IT WORTH IT ?? The body is in great shape and everything else is working fine.
I have a 3VZE engine in my pickup. When the head gasket blew, it fractured one of the sparkplugs which cracked my head. I just had it rewelded because it was only one tiny area, but I assume yours is worse.
If you buy a new or remanufactured head, you should do a valve job on the other head to ensure the compression is similar in all cylinders. A full valve job will cost over $2000 here is CA. I am not sure what kind of break they will give you for 1/2 of a valve job. You could allwyas take the head off and take it into an auto machine shop.
You will have to compare the costs, but offhand replacing the engine seems way more expensive. You have to figure at least $3000-4000 for the engine (conservatively, plus the labor to install all of the parts like the power steering pump, alternator, starter, and alternator and the labor to install it. I would guess that it will cost you at least $5000-6000.
Whoever suggested this may be amortizing the cost over the extra miles that you will get with the "new" engine. I have 47k miles on mine since the valve job (230k total), so as long as the compression in your good cylinders istill above 100 psi you can get by with the valvejob/new head.
Well, you paid bottom dollar, and you got a rig that reflected the price -- most of the outlay is pretty much to be expected for a 1991 in "fair" condition. Until the engine, anyhow.
However, considering you should be able to pick up a pristine example of this vehicle (private party sale) for roughly $3700, I'd be real leery about putting a huge amount of dinero into the beast. I'd definitely have the rest of the drive train inspected before throwing money into a new engine.

Hi, First of all, I like to thank everyone for thier advice. I plan on buying a boat and was told that the 4 runner is not the best vehicle for towing. Considering what I,m going to pay for the repair or replacing the engine its not worth it. Well i guess this quest for advice has turned into a car for sale ad. I have a 1991 toyota 4 runner for sale with a cracked head , new brakes, new rotors, new shocks, ice cold air, new exhaust, no rust, big tires. Make me an offer 215-455-2505 Phila. Pa.
