1994 4Runner 3.0L V6 threw a rod

It punched right through the block. So now I'm faced with the question: Do I junk it or do I replace the engine? The dealership is offering me $1,200 for the body, or offering to replace the engine with a rebuilt one for approx. $4,500.

They also told me that if I wanted to drop ship a fully functional crate engine to them, they would install it for me for $1,500, provided they didn't have to do anything else but bolt it in.

Help!...I'm totally lost. Don't have a clue what to do. I'm no mechanic. Far from it. So I can't do it myself.

I've always wanted to replace the stock engine with a more powerful one. Here's my chance, if I choose to go that direction. But where to get the engine? Where to find the custom shop that can do it; i.e., a custom shop that does this kind of work all the time and has a good reputation, etc.?

Any and all advice much appreciated, thank you. (I'm in Sacramento County if you know of a good shop in this area.)

Thanks again.

$1200 to junk it is my vote. I think $5000 or more to swap the engine in a

13 yo is a waste. I'd get on autotrader. If you have the time, you could part it out; wheels, transmission, seats. Then again, $1200 net to you has a value too.

you can probably get a fair amount more as a "mechanic's special" as long as the rest of the truck is intact.

You can browse craig's list for Sac and see what one is working condition goes for.

I don't know there are many options for a bigger engine for a California smog legal vehicle.

Junk the old motor and stick in a new 4.0 litre Toyota V6. Stick on 33inch tyres and some cool rims, install a 3inch lift kits and winch bars.

With that you can go anywhere and who cares if ya stratch it.

Food for though eh

If the Runner is in good shape and you want to keep it, go the Toyota Auto Parts (TAP) in Rancho Codova and buy a good used engine. That's your best best for the money. If you don't want to keep it, then sell or donate it.
