81 pickup tires

I've got and 81 LB 4wd which needs new tires, and currently has

31/10.50/15s. They have worn in the middle, and I'm told that this may be because they were mounted on the stock rims, which are too narrow (either 5.5" or 6") The tires weren't overinflated. Has anyone else had this problem? Do I really need new rims if i want to stay with 30 or 31" tires? Thanks, Ian

Common issue with tires a lot wider than the rims. My 33x10.50 are wearing faster in the center, mounted on 15x6 stock rims. I had been running them deliberately overinflated to control some handling issues I had, but now that that is fixed, I've been gradually reducing the pressure in the tires and am now running them at 23 psi on the road. Seems to give a good flat footprint and ride. Cornering is a bit less than at higher pressures. I have some ideas on determinging proper tire inflation pressures below:
