Bad starter?/

My 96 4runner with 140,000 is having trouble some times when you go to start it up it clicks once, as if the battery were dead, you can take the key out, flip it over and try it again, some times it will start, some times it will not, eventually after enough key flipping it does start, when it does start, it starts immediatly, there is not problem with the battery or air / fuel / spark it seems there is a loose connection / short some where.

I took it to the dealer today, they said they would look at it in the morning and give me the news, the service writter seemed to think it was a starter though is this something that others have experienced?

also, I am thinking of having the timing belt changed, if they swap the starter, is that in any way a step up on changing the timming belt?

Sounds like your starter solenoid has kicked the bucket. Either that or there's a dud spot on the starter armature. A recon starter will do fine there, and yes while they have it do the timing belt. These parts are very different engine components, if the belt needs doing don't muck around with not doing it as it may cost you a whole heap more if you let it slide.

No. Why are you so thinking? This isn't a think thing, but a mileage thing.

I'm thinking if it aint broke, don't fix it, but, your probably right, preventative maint is a good idea

Yeah, I think it is 60 K, if it was an interference engine, I would have done it earlier, but, I didn't want to get it replaced and find out that the mechanic did sloppy work or something like that.

Don't replace the starter, its easy and inexpensive to fix:

Not really, totally different part of the engine.

If it breaks, you'll find you have an interference engine after all.

dave it might be the small wire on the starter loose enought to do this try slightly sqeezing the connetion but do not do it to much just enough to know you did it then put it back on. dave if its the nut type that tightens the wire then its possible that an relay is the problem but i'm not sure it has one please for give need book to look at
