I had a '90 4runner that I bought when it was 10 yrs old and only had 93K miles on it. The truck was totalled when it had 245K miles on it, but the engine was still running strong. 3.? liter V6.
I'm looking at a '97 4runner that has 91K miles on it. 3.4 liter V6. Are they as good as the engines that were in the '90?
Any comments?

Cappy from my understandings the new V6's are better than the old ones. Your old V6 was a 3.0l and the new ones are 3.4l. There are plenty of enhancements for the new V6 engines, such as a bolt on supercharger from TRD.
Probably better. Took a couple years to get the bugs out of the 3.4L, but by
1997 they were solid units. BTW, I think the 1990 was a 2.9L V6. Same gas mileage as the 3.4L...go figure.Has the timing belt been replaced on the 1997? The service interval is 60K miles on that year, but most folks (including myself) tended to let it slide until the 90-100K range.
I don't know, I'd have to check that out. Is it a belt or a chain? My '86 truck is coming about due for the chain to be replaced...

The 3.4L V6 uses a belt. It's a non-interference engine, so you won't ruin the engine if the belt breaks, but I'd figure it's time for a new belt after 90 thou and pushing 10 years of service.
No it was a 3.0l I use to have a 92 Toyota P/U with a V6 in it.
