Erratic 1990 Speedo

Dec 20, 2005 3 Replies

My 90 2wd 22re is acting up. When my speedometer hits 45 mph, it instantly jumps to 60mph and wiggles back and forth. Once my speed exceeds 60 mph, the speedo needle stabilizes and functions normally. The needle shows a shaky 60 mph for all speeds between 45 & 60 but works normally above and below this range. Anyone ever heard of this or have any experience with this? What would be the most likely cause, Speedometer, cable, gear? There is no noise coming from the instrument cluster or cable.

I believe this is always been a problem with those, I had it in my 90 4x4 P/U V6 and I also have it in my 4 runner (90) with same engine. I am now starting to get that whirrring sound, time to get a noew speedo cable.

Relube the speedo cable - good for another year then (liquid graphite) --- or replace it and good for 3 or so years.

I heard someone sells a lube adapter for TOY speedo cables...any idea who?
