Front Differential problems

I have a 90 4runner 4WD and my front diff on the passenger side is making a loud noise from it. I think the gear or something in there is gone bad. My question is... is a diff repair job cost alot? and could you some how "disconect" the 4wd (since I dont use it anymore)

Thanks Mike

With the transfer case in 2H, disengaging the hubs, the diff should not be turning. Have you tried going in & out of 4wd to see if the noise changes?

You say noise on the passenger side; how far outboard does it seem to be? Might want to check to see if the auto-hub is hung up. Had to replace them on my '88 (the previous owner replaced but those only lasted ~4 years), and the '86 I just bought seems to have a passenger side that won't disengage. Got manual Warns, better than OEM.

Some good articles on repairing and upgrading the front axles on the IFS Toyotas are located here:

You likely have the ADD front axle vs. auto hubs, you might check this page:

The Aisin (OEM) manual locking hubs are the best option for upgrading, they are stronger and less expensive than the Warn hubs.

I had a friend swear he had a bad front diff outboard. When we checked together, it was his brake on that side. So I guess you need to say if you eliminated all but the front axel / hub.
