help 92 diagnostic? starter

Ive a 92 4runner 3.0v6.

For a little backround, its really cold here, the starter sticks and spins once. has worked ok ever since. 2 days later, on the way home, the check engine lite comes on! next morning she starts fine but lite still on so i went online for how to check diagnostic. at least one of the codes, 3 i think, has to do with the starter. drove about 80 miles that day, on the way home the check engine lite goes off. so i guess it could be that the start is going out gracefully?, or maybe the sensor is bad or cold. has anyone ever had a similar experience? what happened? im wondering if i should risk waiting till spring so i can replace it myself if it needs it.

A clicking sound from the starter is usuallya sign of worn copper contacts inside tjhe starter solenoid (that is part of the starter). It is easy and inexpensive to repair, see the following page for a full description:
