Quickened temperature rise

My buddy and I just replaced my alternator belts that links with the fan belt on my 1990 22-re 4-runner and am noticing that the temperature gauge is rising faster than normal. It used to take about

5 miles to reach the middle of the temperature gauge and now it reaches the middle around less than a mile. Maybe I should drive it long enought to see if it hits red. Are the belts on too tight? He sprayed some wd-40 but I am noticing no slippage. Could the spray be the problem?
