1303 brake job

Hello all.

Long time no type !

well, my MOT test is due on my bay soon and my 1303 is still in two halves in the garage so I couldnt put it off any longer.

The frame head needed replacing. I was a bit aprehensive about starting it, so I havent touched it for a few months. Anyway I need so space so I gave it a go. Wow ! it only took half a day to cut the old one out and weld the new one in ! Not too bad a job either. I was about 1mm out with my before / after alignment .

Thge next day, I got both heater chanels cut out and the new one loosely fitted (will re-hang doors before welding anything)

Anyway, I am starting to think about putting the car back together again and want some opinions on what to do with the brakes.

renew - or - recondition ?

should I put new MC and WC's in or just rebuild them with new seals ?

Thanks Rich

Not sure you can get kits for the MC any more, WC are so cheap I would not even consider rebuild.

If you are comfortable with the process and have the tools, I suggest rebuilding. Many of the replacement parts available today are of inferior quality to what was originally supplied.

I rebuild everything I can. If you clean up the parts and inspect them you can generally just hone the bores and reuse all the inner parts. Parts that are torn or hard should be replaced.

I have seen kits for MC's. Just wondered what people thought of them. WC's are cheap if you buy non VW ones ! Is a genuine VW MC worth rebuilding over a non genuine cheap copy ?

I am asking becuase my local aircooled supplier doesnt sell the repair kits because 'he' doesn't beleive in them.

The brakes worked fine before I split the body from the chassis, I just thought I might take the opportunity to refurb the brake system whilst its apart !

I know nothing about what's involved with rebuilding the brake system - yet !. Or what tools I need. At the moment I just wondered what your views were on rebuilding original parts were against replacing with cheap aftermarket ones.

What 'special' tools do you think I might need to do the job right ?

I just rebuilt the brakes (disc) on the front of my 72 bus.

I used a socket wrench, an air compressor (to pop the pistons out of the cylinders) fine sand paper, and a rebuild kit (gaskets)

pulled them off the bus, sprayed with penetrating lubricant (they were rusted and seized)...

used compressor to pop the pistons out.

fine sand paper to clean up the pistons and cylinders.

replaced the gaskets

oiled them with brake fluid

put them back together.

they work fine now.

make sure you bleed them well before you drive it.

I replaced all the brake components (springs, shoes, cylinders, hoses) of my daily driver "Clayton" when I bought him three years ago, and now my master cylinder is leaking, and the switchs have failed. I replaced the switches, and bled the brakes, and the fluid is dirty. I'd like to rebuild all cylinders, because I like to keep them painted with POR-15. And I'm a nerd, and I like to repair over replace.

I can't seem to find master cylinder rebuild kits either at my FLAPS, nor on line. Even my favorite on line parts store "aircooled.net" does not have wheel cylinder kits.

Does anyone have any leads to master cylinder rebuild kits?

Preferably John will supply them.

Watch ebay; look for seller Millerstamp, perhaps even email him, Check out old parts shops in your area. You may need to look for a place that has some sitting on the shelf for a long time.

JC Whitney used to carry them, but sometimes they are from India and have plated steel pistons. The correct pistons are alum or some light alloy.
