I've transplanted a rock-stock DP into an early 912 Porsche while I slowly ($$) rebuild the original motor. The Porsche gearing seems a little "short" for the VW, since the 912 motor is very comfortable cruising in the 3500-4200 rpm range. Is it safe to run the VW on the fwy at a continuous 3500-4000 rpm? Thanks. Bill.

I see no reason not to, just keep an eye on engine temps. How much does that translate to in speed? 70mph? Sustained 60mph is what they were designed for, and a good condition late model 1600 should not have trouble doing 70mph, assuming everything is in good shape and the engine is in good tune.
The potential high risk area is closer to 5000, for a non-counterweighed crank

If he is running all the stock cooling sheet metal and a stock oil pump, the valves will float before he gets into trouble, unless he's obesive and pulling a trailer up a hill..
