69 BUG - Help needed identifying what is missing...

First.. Thanks to all for taking the time and effort to answer the various questions on this group. It makes owning and maintaining these little cars easier and more enjoyable!

I have a 69 bug (daily driver) that started to make a very intermittent clunking noise in the rear end. I had looked a few months ago and didn't see anything. Yesterday, I heard it again and looked at it early this morning. This time I noticed that something is missing from the swing axel. Unfortunately, I can't find a reference to this area in any of my catalogs..

Since I only had time to snap a picture of the area and won't be able to get under the bug for a few days. I was hoping someone may be able to give me some info on the missing part(s) including where to get it and how best to replace it.

The picture of the missing part is here:

Wow....don't drive that bug anymore, that's dangerous and bad for your beetle.

I think you will have to get that bolt from a junkyard. I've never seen them advertised new from a vw parts store.

I have two of those lying in my garage, BUT, I'm in the Netherlands....there must be someone (or a junkyard) closer to you who's got them....

BTW, they are difficult to remove underneath the car..they are screwed on pretty tight (hmmmm...is that correct english?!?!).

Greetings, Gerrelt.

Gerrelt is correct (and his English is excellent!)

It is a very special shoulder bolt and you will have trouble finding one. (May be worth shipping from Netherlands!)

You really need to have the Bentley Shop Manual for '66 thru '69; it shows this in great detail. Note that this assembly affects the rear wheel alignment. You should get the 2 bonded rubber bushings for it as well; they are commonly available.

BTW, your car is *not* a "swing-axle". It is the first production year for the IRS w/4-spd.

I had a 68 autostick with an irs rear suspension that this same bolt came out.... got one from a junk yard. i did a search and came up with what I believe is what you are looking for from BYF obsolete parts. it is used... but its better than crawling under a junker looking for one, or not having one at all. you'll need a 17mm hex wrench to install the replacement it also looks like you are missing the 2 big washers...

This newsgroup is awesome!

The missing bolt and washers have been located close to my home and with a little luck I will be putting the bug back together very soon. Hopefully the threads are still in good shape.

Special thanks to all who took the time to offer assistance.

Happy Easter
