73 squareback

I plan to sheetmetal in the back windows to give it a sedan delivery look and I want to cut off the drip edge. Does anyone know what problems I might encounter in taking off the drip edge around the roof?

The drip edge is what holds the roof to the rest of the body. You'll have to weld those 2 parts together carefully if you want to preserve the body integrity.

Exactly. Only the drip edge is THREE layers of sheetmetal rolled into a lip. (Not two). You need to weld them all together.

Cut 2-4 inches, spot weld, let it cool, cut next 2-4 inches, spot weld slowly, let it cool... it will take a full weekend because you need to be VERY careful with heat warping and work in very short sections at a time.

All in all, it's not worth it. Your door seals will let water in too. :)

There's three layers but it's only two pieces of metal............See link. Unless the Type3's are constructed a bunch differnetly, this will be the general construction practice used from the factory.

Looks like you would have to do some forming of the sheet metal before you could weld it anyhow.

.............It looks like you could teach the shagmeister a thing or two about how to use a sawzall.

Part of that was done with Sawzall, some with airsaw.Doesn't take a day to annihilate a beetle with the proper tools.

Remember, a worm drive Skil Saw with an abrasive blade does a pretty good job as well!:~)
