73 VW voltage regulator

Does anybody know how to check a 1973 VW voltage regulator with a volt/ohmmeter? The system is not charging at all and I have the regulator removed.

'73 used both generator and alternator (late). In any event, there is no good way to test without better equipment than a VOM.

I'll assume you have a Gen. Go to my web site and read: "How do I test my generator?" If the Gen tests OK, replace the Reg.

Speedy Jim...

I have a smarts question....

A smart guy told me the best way to check the generator/regulator system was to pull the battery cable with it running... with a generator and regulator... the system should run without a battery..... Was this guy right?

Timmy

Yes, that is (partly) correct. It will tell you if the Gen is charging. What it won't tell is whether the regulator is adjusting the charging voltage correctly. A voltmeter across the battery will tell though.

Generator or Alternator?

If you have a generator I have a FAQ that can explain how to do your testing.
