I tried everything to get rid of that backfiring, and a local mechanic told me today he saw sparks coming out of my exhaust (risky sh*t) However, the bus has enough power and goes nicely up a hill, timing seems to be fine as well. Any suggestions, i tried adjusting the carb.

Nevermind, the problem is found. Cracked head, sigh. Second one that goes on me in a month time, however, all cooling tin and rubbers is correctly installed. Engine pull tomorrow to inspect the damage.

You've got that many spare ones about, surely !

As a matter of fact i do, and people keep bringing me volkswagen parts. Today i bought a twinport engine for R300, VERY crappy looking but i hope to salvage some spares, was laying outside for years. First thing is pull the heads and check them, if they are good they go to engineering for a clean and checkup and on the shelf as parts. I do sell spares, all spares are checked. I am in South Africa, many VW here.
