Bench starting an engine w/o a muffler

Is it possible or do you need the back pressure? I have a 'spare' engine I don't want to spend the money for a muffler if I don't need to.

by "muffler" do you mean....um... well, a muffler, or do you mean the entire exhaust system won't be present? A header without a muffler would be okay, but I wouldn't let one run for long if there's no exhaust at all present... Backpressure(or lack of) isn't going to be the problem, but the tendancy for ambient(cool) air to cause damage to hot exhaust valves is real if you have no exhaust at all..
