Bosch Alternator bad - worth trying to fix

Oct 10, 2003 3 Replies

The Bosch Alternator in my wife's 73 super beetle is not outputting. I'm wondering if it is worth stripping it down with maybe a fix possible. A new one is over $150. I see brush sets are available for $11 - is this likely the problem?

your local starter alternator repair shop should be able to sell you a set of brushes for $2.... my local shop will TOTALLY clean the fan and alt/gen for $25 and put in new brushes...

If you decide to have it done... We've found that your core rebuilt for $100 is a better job than an import rebuilt for $130.

I've stripped the Bosch AL 51N down and the brushed look good with lots of use left. The windings and the coil all have good resistance - no breaks or burnouts - so maybe it is just the voltage controller? But I cant get that. Have you access to them?
