bought a new camshaft for my 77 2.0L Westie...what is it?

It's made by Weber Cam in Costa Mesa,Ca. New in box, comes with camshaft, gear and all nuts/washers heavy duty springs, hydraulic lifters, spacers for the rocker arms, pushrods with mushroom type tips, plus a tube of locktite 271. oh, and a window sticker for Weber Cams.

stats sheet as follows: Engine: VW Hyd Grind# 520H

Cam duration IN 250 EX 250 Cam lift .315 .315 Valve lift .409 .409 Valve clearance .000 .000

Duration is checked @ .20.

Valve timing: INOP 17 BTC INCL 53 ABC EXOP 53 BBC EXCL 17 ATC

Some handwritten notes on back of stats include tightening torques and timing advance: 2 degrees more than stock.

I was told by the seller it was made to upgrade from solid to hyd. lifters in my yr.engine, plus added some power. I took his word at it, but can't find any info on the Weber page and don't have a stock number to search with.

So, i'm hoping my $49 Ebay purchase is suitable for my rebuild. (Pretty much stock FI 2.0L with additional 96mm piston/cylinders, new header/extractor and anything else my budget will allow)

Does anyone have any addtional info to add to the above as to what i can expect from this cam setup?

am a newbie here, have looked/searched in previous posts about cams, have looked at aircooled .net at their setup which is different from above. So, thought i'd toss out the stats to see if anyone knows anymore.

thanks dp

it says "Find messages with at least one of the words" enter in the box "hydraulic cam lifter" For Groups, enter "rec.autos.makers.vw.aircooled" For Author, enter "veeduber" To the left of the Google Search button which, not surprisingly, is the last step in the search, change the drop down button to "Sort by relevance"

The results should return you about 81 messages, with the most relevant ones first.

I have a June 1984 issue of Hot VWs showing an ad for Web-Cam at 1663 Superior Ave in Costa Mesa. Next, I have the March 1990 issue with Weber Cams now at that same address, and a separate ad for Web-Cam located in Riverside, CA. I live about 15 miles from Costa Mesa. About 4 years ago I went to the Superior Ave address and IIRC was told the owner of Weber had retired and had closed up shop. They stopped advertising in Hot VWs before Feb. 1997.

I can't advise you one way or the other whether the 520H grind is suitable for your engine, but Weber had an excellent reputation for converting Type 1 to hydraulic cam and lifters. Since yours is a Type 4 engine it should be an easy enough switch. If your engine came originally with solid lifters, you should try to find out whether or not the oil galleries need to be opened up. I suggest after doing the Google Groups search and educating yourself with those messages that you contact Veeduber (Bob Hoover) and ask him what he thinks. He would know about the oil galleries.

Getting the cam AND the lifters for $49 is a steal. That's got to be less than what it cost from Weber more than 10 years ago.

That is indeed sad news. Weber was one of the last top quality cam makers. It's too bad he didn't have a family member interested in taking over the company.

Amazing. Why did you buy it if you don't know WTF it is?

Man, I hope you aren't the grocery shopper in your place.
