Can I lower my bug by cutting or heating the springs?

Do a search in google and google groups. There are lots of information, and the issue is broad enough not to be summarized in one message. Study a bit and post more concise, easier to answer, questions. As Jan said, never compromise safety for looks. If you want to lower the front, change the springs if it's a super, or install lowered spindles if it is standard. For the rear it's easier, just unmount the spring plate and turn one or two splines. Of course, all this is not all, just to give you a general impression of the task. As said, you have to do a lot of homework before lowering your bug.

Do *not* cut or heat or modify the springs in any way. There are lowering kits commercially available that will work as intended without compromising safety. Or driveability, which should be your secondary concern.

There's a reason why your methods are illegal in many places, including my country.

Buy 300# of sand in bags and put it in the trunk, you'll look plenty cool and it won't cost much.

I agree that lowered spindles are the best way to lower a bug. They use stock length shocks, so you get a better ride. They lower the front end

Thank you John.... I needed a little chuckle this morning; reminded me of an answer you gave a couple of years ago... question was similar, but somebodey asked the best (cheapest) way to improve handling in a bug, you replied: "get a smaller steering wheel". LOL.

with 300 lbs. of sand and a smaller steering wheel, parallel parking is gonna be tough ;)

get in contact with the guys from topline parts when lowering a super.

you can lower the bottom spring plate on the strut assembly and install different strut cartriges made for lowered supers and still keep the stock springs.

again thou call top lineparts and ask them

See my site below and got to R&R the Front end. It will lead you to a link on installing the adjusters. I did mine and am happy with the results.
