How can I tell if my 94 corolla has a 1.6L EFI DOHC or a 1.8L EFI DOHC? Is there a way to tell by looking at the VIN?
Every time I go to AutoZone to buy parts they ask me and I don't know what to tell them... I guess I've gotten lucky with the parts that I've bought.
There's often a sticker on top of the engine. Pop the hood.
For Corollas sold in the U.S., the Standard sedan had a 1.6 liter engine and the DX and LE had 1.8 liter engines.
If the car has intermittent windshield wipers, it is a DX or LE. If it does not have intermittent wipers, it is a Std.
An STD? I thought that no one wanted those.:)
That could by the base model's designation was changed to CE!
Yowza, that intermittent-wipe function eats a lot of extra power.
...or somewhere under the hood, at least. I have a 95 with the 1.6 and there is an identification sticker on the bracket that the grille is attached to. As a previous poster said, the 1.6 was only installed on the very cheapest models.
As I understand it ( and don't take this for gospel) the 1.6 was essentially the same engine used in the Tercel. The valve train components will be different between it and the 1.8 since the 1.6 was an interference design.
Get that timing belt changed on schedule!
FWIW, my 1.6 is at 165,000 miles and still going strong!
Is this the F4E engine ? I thought that was non-interference. What's a normal price to have it changed ? What else to change while they are down there (waterpump ?) and how much extra should it cost.?
IIRC, the 1.6 liter engine is the 4AFE and the 1.8 is the 7AFE.
According to gates.com, both use timing belts and both are non-interference engines.
Prices to replace timing belts range from $150 to $350. A water pump should cost about $150 extra.
In the 93-95 Corollas E09x is the 1.8 and E04x is the 1.6
Example a VIN starting with JT2AE09E..... is the 1.8 made in Japan(JT2) has the A engine and is a Corolla (E) with the 1.8 engine(09), probably from
1993(E=4 door sedan.) 1NXAE04B ......is the 1.6 made in Fremont California. 1NX = NUMMI, Fremont. A = A series engine 04 means it's the 1.6 A series engine, i.e. the 4A-FE and B means it's a 1994 or 1995 4 door sedan.After this in the VIN is the check digit, followed by the year letter (P=93, R=94, S=95) Followed by the plant Z= Fremont Ca., for instance, followed by the 6 digit production number.
