Coil and Dizzy questions (lots of them)

Hello all and merry xmas!



I'm using all the free time I have on these days to check everything on the bug and make sure all is perfect. I have a bosch blue coil installed in it, coupled to a 009 dizzy (I got lucky with this one, almost no flat spot), and it works great. But soon I'll be installing a SVDA (maybe with compufire) and CD ignition (mallory probably). And I have a few questions. I've read somewhere that if my coil doesn't have a ballast resistor in it my dizzy/compufire can burn up. I always assumed the blue coil has the ballast resistor in it, but somewhere i read most of them don't. How do I know if it has on inside? I measured resistance acros the primary and secondary circuit (3.8 ohms and 8,800 ohms respectively), and I know that means the coil is Ok, but does this mean I have the resistor? if i don't have it, must I install one of those ceramic external ones between the coil and dizzy? I have a few laying around.



According to some websites, the CD ignition feeds the dizzy a very small current and the coil a strong/high voltage one, do I still need the ballast resistor with this? Is the blue coil enough for a mallory hyfire VI?

This might not sound to helpfull as in spesifics, but since this is holiday season and no one has replied I'll give you the down and dirty.

Read the spec reqirement on the point replacement module, from what I can remember they all(known to me) ask for a standard coil, as in the 4 Ohm range, none of the latter 1,5Ohm jobs.

If you are running a stock style coil you are very likely ok.. Again read the spec recs that comes with the module, 4 Ohms should be good..

Ok, then I supose my coil is good for the module. What about the CD ignition? anyone?

Your CDI module will work with the stock style coil, I run a Compufire points replacement module hooked to a Universial Industries CDI box, linked to a stock style coil. Open your plugs to 1mm and you are ready to roll!

Works great, as in power it will give you nothing but slight taller revs on a stock engine, the beauty is the quick start, normally within one full revolution of the engine, and that is no lie!!
