Does anyone know about different shift rod lenghts

I am in the process of converting my semi-auto ghia to manual. I bought a new shift rod as I had read that the manual one is shorter but it was far too short (about 1110mm 43 3/4 inches) so I reverted back to the auto shift one (about 1140mm 44 7/8 inches). I have been able to get all gears now but only by pushing the stop plate as far back as possible and even then 1st and 3rd don't go in as nicely as 2nd &

4th, it just doesnt seem quite long enough. I haven't got the engine back in yet so don't know how well it will work. I just wondered if anyone knows how many different lengths there are before I get it all back together and find that its too short then.

Not only were auto and manual different, but they varied by year too as VW moved the location of the shifter.

You can use the autostick one if you redrill the coupling to reposition the set screw. To see what I mean, disconnect the coupling. Then put the tranny in Reverse gear using a "suitable tool".

Now, with coupling still disconnected, use the shifter to select Reverse. Go back and see how many degrees of rotation the set screw if "off" . That's the correction factor you need to make.
