DOH! What happened?!

Well...just ran a tune up on my 73 type 1 1600DP. Replaced rotor, cap, points and condenser, and adjusted the valves. Here's the wierd thing.

It was about 20 degrees out today, so I *pushed* the car into the garage, so I could adjust the valves DEAD cold. The car hadn't been driven that day, the last time was over 24 hours ago. Upon checking the valves, they were ALL too tight. So tight I couldn't get the .006 through. Must have been about .003 or .002. Well...OK! I had adjusted the valves 2500 miles ago! How come they were all so tight? Whatever. So I set all 8 valves to .006, just like I have always done. Start up the engine when I'm finished, and CLATTER CLATTER CLATTER! Noisiest valves I've ever heard. When previously set at .006, the car sounded perfect. What gives? I unfortunately had to drive the car anyway, but only about 40 miles round trip. I know that noisy valves won't do any damage, (unless they're REALLY loose) but I would like to know why, at my normal setting, the valves are suddenly so loud! Did I screw up somehow? I'm pretty sure I adjusted them on the correct rotation of the cam, but could the extremely cold weather have anything to do with it? Sorry for the long post! Appreciate any replies. ~Anthony

Sounds to me you adjusted them att the wrong place on the cam, the cold "theory" :o) is of no significance..

Just guessing, but I'll bet you adjusted the valves with the engine 180 degrees off.

He he he...upon pondering the situation last night, I beleive I remember rotating the engine the wrong way between adjustments...DOH. Supposed to go counter-clockwise, I think I went clockwise. Whoops.

You have just passed the Humbler test. :) I wonder who, in his early daze, didn't make the same mistake.
