Valve clearance

Feb 28, 2007 5 Replies

The guy at the local air cooled VW shop here told me that with swivel foot valve adjusters that the valve clearance should be set at .002" cold. This seems awfully tight to me and I'm concerned about burning up my valves. Any opinions?

Is he referring to your engine, and does he know what kind of pushrods you used? What cooling setup you have? If not, the dudes on glue and this should serve as a red flag to your future business.

Valve clearance is there to offset the different expansion rates of the components in your engine. You'd probably be OK if your pushrods were CM. Otherwise, it's too tight for a stock engine.

Thanx that's what I was thinking. It has stock push rods shortened 5mm. Cooling is stock and the engine is dual port 1.6l with 88mm machine in cylinders bring it up to 1.7l. This engine has also been balanced and blueprinted but I don't think this matters to the topic of valve clearance.

I guess I'm back to not having a local shop I can trust to work on my Bug when I don't feel like it.

My man, get rid of those adjusters! Just my two-bits worth!

The cheap EMPI swivel-foots are total crap. Poor quality steel, cheaply made in China, and most importantly, no provision for lubrication. It's not a question of IF they will fail, just when. I'd think at least 1 or 2 in the first

20 hours.

The "Mazda" type with the captured ball hold up not too bad and once the ball is seated, they hold the clearance pretty consistently. The down- side is a bit more difficulty with the feeler gauge and the need to trim the underside of the rocker. The are drilled for positive lubrication. Watch that you don't roll the flat into the socket when you install them.

Best way is genuine Porche adjusters or new rockers with the adjusters on the pushrod end.

I don't remember who made these; I bought them 8 or 9 years ago. Anyway they ran 35k miles in the old engine without any signs of wear. I can't swear by it but I'm pretty sure they were marked "made in the USA" on the package.

The old engine died after some asshole popped off the air filter and poured fine dirt down the carb. By the time I noticed the air filter was loose, the cylinders were shot. When I tore it down the combustion chambers were packed with dirt.
