Electrical Issues

Anybody know of a place or business that supplies a COMPLETE wiring harness for a '74 Super Beetle Sedan? From what I have seen, only the main wiring harness is available for this car.

Other Electrical Q's: I remember reading somewhere of a modification to hook up the starter more directly to the battery instead of going the roundabout stock route (juice flowing around to the front of the car before flowing into the starter). If I am not imagining things, could someone link to a schematic of this modification? Or give a detailed explanation to an wiring newbie such as myself?

How do you modify the wiring to convert from the old externally regulated alternator to the new AL82X unit (internal regulator)?

Much thanks!

The mod is only to provide adequate current to the starter solenoid, not the starter motor itself:

It works well, but expect to get flamed...

Under the back seat, remove the old regulator. The Blu wire which goes into the main harness must remain connected to the Red wire which went to the regulator.

At the new alternator, connect that Red wire to the D+ terminal.

Connect the big fat wire (Red or Red/Wh) to the big B+ stud as before.

That's it.

I smelled the smoke when I opened the post. My bug is wired with the relay on the starter and was that way when I bought it. Works fine for me.

Do I smell smoke.............

Hmm, Aircooled.net only seems to offer only a MAIN wiring harness for the '73+ Super Beetles at this time. Regarding the Starter ckt modification: from the other posts, all this talk about flaming/smoking relays has me a wee bit worried. Maybe when I get the new wiring harness installed, I won't do this operation. However, this modification has been done to my car (not by me personally tho) and I was just trying to figure out how to reproduce this when I redo the wiring.

While surfing through Aircooled.net, got pretty interested in the electrically driven windshield washer system. Hope other folks who have this system would show how to mount and wire up this system.

Glad to see another Opera fan here in RAMVA. I am convinced that Internet Explorer is a permanently open security hole. Plus they (MS) haven't been innovating like Opera has (mouse gestures, pop-up control, multiple windows...)

don't worry about the relay....all the talk of flaming/smoking is meant to be about the flack some of us(Not *ME*...hehe) give to those that choose to use a "hardstart relay" over doing what we(me?) consider a "proper fix".... JT
