Newbie's new muffler...

Hello -

After taking João's advice and looking for holes in my 1700 exhaust, I've decided to replace my muffler (silencer?) - it's full of holes on both sides near the connections to the heat exchangers. So's the tailpipe.

I have ordered a new Ernst muffler, tailpipe and set of gaskets. As far as I can tell from browsing the archives, I should strip off the paint that comes on these new components, and repaint them with POR-20. Is that right?

I am assuming (in ignorance) that this is an easy job. Am I likely to fail? Any obvious 'gotchas'? Do I need to re-tune the engine or something scary like that afterwards?!

Thanks for any pointers!

Wire brush on a drill motor will remove it --- or take long drive and get it real hot then use wire brush on it.

Hey Leo Yeah I'm a newbie too. I get to work on my bug every other weekend because of my actual life.

i had to replace the exhaust and thought it was going to be a chore. You'll be suprised to fine that theres really nothing to it. Just make sure you wear safty goggles. it took my 45 minutes to take off the old muffler and about 20 minutes to put on the new one. (mainly due to fear of doing something wrong.) let us know how it goes oh and yeah...put on the new muffler. drive for 20-30 minutes or until you feel it's warm enough. than wire brush it.

Thanks for the encouragement! I've got the new muffler fitted. The old one came off quite easily - most of the bolts sheared off when I tried to loosen the nuts! Fitting the new one was OK but there was one nut that was really awkward to get at - on the top of the right hand side.

Anyway, I haven't had it running yet to get the paint burned off - I need to find a shop that sells high temperature paint first!

Sorry for posting on someone else's post but I am a newbie too and trying to figure out the posting.....does anyone know what is the approximate cost to replace the muffler on a 97 VW Jetta? Not doing it myself, so I will have to take it to a local shop

This is the aircooled forum (old bugs, ghias, squarebacks, buses, etc). You're better off asking the guys in the rec.autos.makers.vw.watercooled forum.
