Dansk muffler owners

This is why I weld my own flanges on. That way I can use my own engine as a jig and get a perfect fit.

Fellow air-cooled drivers,

I have a '74 California Super Beetle with the dual pre-heat pipes.

I picked up a muffler that is represented as being Dansk from a local shop. It is gray in color and appears to be a well crafted muffler. Between the tail pipe inlets there is a flat rectangular area about 1" x

5". There are no markings or stampings on the muffler. There is a sticker that has "JP Group Denmark" on the top. There is a red logo of some kind of animal. I removed my German muffler and tried to install this muffler. It doesn't fit. I can't get the muffler to fit on all 4 head studs. I measured the center to center distance of the upper stud holes (left and right) of both mufflers and they are almost exact. The center to center distance of the lower stud holes (left and right) is the problem. Its off by 1/8" or more. I'm thinking of drilling out all 4 holes and enlarging them. Right now a "T" drill bit just fits into the holes. The diameter of a "T" drill bit is .358. I am going to start with a "U" drill bit which is .368. I'm going to keep enlarging the 4 holes until the muffler slides onto the 4 head studs. I don't know what else I can do.

All you guys who installed Dansk mufflers: did you have to modify them or did they bolt right up like my German muffler did?

Is there any chance the parts distributor is just pasting a Dansk sticker on Brazilian mufflers?

I first called the shop owner and asked for a Dansk muffler. He told me that he could get German. I was surprised and immediately ordered one. When I called him back the next day he told me that he received a Dansk muffler. He was surprised that it wasn't German. He told me that I don't have to buy it and that he would just send it back. But I told him that I want Dansk if I can't get German.

Its the story of my life. I'm always a day late and a dollar short. When the German mufflers were readily available I didn't buy one. Now that they are no longer available I want one.

Thanks in advance

Each engine is *slightly* different in width, ans the new mufflers that are built on different jigs are just slightly different too.. they NEVER fit right. You practically always have to use a little force to get them on.

The old muffler seems to be a perfect fit, because it has taken the new shape due to the countless heat cycles it has seen over the years. It didn't fit any better when it was first installed.

It would require a lot of luck to find a muffler that fits right in without forcing it.

I.e. Don't worry about it. Just do what you need to get it on.
