Hi ramva!



As my previous post says, I've been dealing with installing a full flow filter pump on my 1600 DP. This pump has 32mm gears, so oil pressure is an issue. I already checked for axial play and left it at 0.15mm to lower the pressure a little (is this enough?).



Now my question is about the type of oil I should use. Until now, I've always used SAE 40. I'm in the middle of the caribbean, So I have a permanent summer. Engine warmups times are really short or non existent. Should I use thinner oil to compensate for the raise in oil pressure? What about multigrade? Synthetic? I got so many options and not a clue on where to begin. Should I just keep my SAE 40?

To really be able to tell which of your tricks worked as intended, you should change one thing at a time only, and observe the results over a period of time. If it didn't have the desired effect, go back and change something else. If you changed 10 things on the engine, and it worked, you still don't know what was causing it. Wouldn't it be nice to have the answer to your questions, rather than a bucket of tricks that seemed to work?

Yes it can be a bit tedious, but I'd be curious enough to learn what part of the combination does what when changed.

Great point Jan. I'll just assemble the pump like that, and if something fails, I'll try checking the relief valves or changing to a different kind of oil. If it works ok, I won't lower the axial play.
