client. The news servers are similar to email servers or web servers - you connect to them and download information to your computer using the appropriate client software.
******** You're right - I'm sooo confused! But can't you just get a "news reader" & forget the "news servers"? Bear with me here; us old men don't always fully understand this tech shtuff. I was planning to get a news reader & give up talkaboutautos.com, 'cause it's a pain to copy & paste previous posts when needed. Any info on free news readers is *much* appreciated. ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"Giggle Cream - it makes dessert *funny*!
Try teranews.com. $4 sign up fee. You can download pictures. I still use it as a back-up. I use Outlook Express as my newsreader.

server" is where the "news reader" connects to the newsgroups through.
******** Oh; so I guess Outlook accesses via mickysoft's servers. Bummer. Guess I'll stick with talkaboutautos.com. Thanks, ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"Giggle Cream - it makes dessert *funny*!
No, you have to have a news server. When you use talkaboutautos.com or Google groups you're using your web browser as the news reader and those companies are using their web servers as news servers, sort of. Otherwise, when you want to read newsgroup messages you have to find a news server and configure your news reader program (Agent, Outlook Express, Gravity, etc.) to connect to a particular news server.
I'm using a program called Agent from
You can use multiple news servers as well. Some companies will have their own "specialty" news servers that you might want to connect to. For instance, if you found out there was a particular Microsoft newsgroup you wanted to read and it wasn't being carried by your main news server you could connect to msnews.microsoft.com to read it. Or if you were a fan of Steve Gibson's software you could connect to news.grc.com to read his support groups.
after reading here about the change over to a fee based service, i searched through my spambox and found the email....
No.. a news reader will be "empty" until you configure it to access a news server. The reader is just a tool, with no content.

Not so, you can configure it to access any news server that allows it
Some allow only reading, some also posting. Some require registration, some don't. Some are free, some are not. They are not reader program dependent at all.

Xananews is free and easy to use. Has a lot of groups.
That's just a news reader and not a service, right?
So I now realize. I guess then my news server is thru verizon. Sorry about that.
No problems. You got my hopes up for a second, though.
(The next version of Agent is going to support, finally, multiple newsservers so I'm on the look out for more.)
