The Maverick was a weird car compared to the Beetle. While the Beetle had these skinny little doors, the Maverick was basically a full-sized Detroit car (thickness of doors, and other "skin" pieces) reduced in size to have a similar external form factor. The result was a vehicle with virtually no interior space. It was all "skin". The back seat was uncomfortable to ride in even for kids (I was one when I road in a Maverick.).

The Corvair Spider... now THAT would have been a car.... pancake 6 cylinder engine (stamped sheet metal front "axle" that rusted through easily....). Oh welll. KWW

True enough, little space in the back, but a marvel of detroit engineering nonetheless...............they didn't even know they built a megaphone for the 6x9 speakers to play out through.....................LOL. The front seat was large enough................I did lots of things in the front seat , that most people wouldn't even try in a normal bedroom,..........er,.............uh ..............on normal sof...........well,........things that were not easily done other places.

LOL

Ouch. Coming home to Volkswagen must have been like entering paradise. My first car was a '68 Squareback, bought it for $19.00 in 1977, PO couldn't figure out the F.I. I put the air sensor hose back on, drove

8,000 miles, sold it for $20.00 Bought my '73 bus next in 1979, still drive it. Still love it. Colin

My Maverick was given to me by a friend of the family when their code enforcement officer told them he was going to fine them $25.00 a day for everyday it was sitting in their backyard....it had been their for 8 years. Needless to say, it wasn't a joy to drive then. I remember my dad using pieces of coat hangers for spark plug wires just to get it home. I was actually happy when the 6 cylinder motor decided to go to that geat boneyard in the sky. I sold it for $50.00 to another friend. Don't know what happened to it then. My Super was an autostick...I remember hating the autostick but find myself wanting to try one again.

At 16 I had a '69 Datsun 510 4dr. $250 and it had a small "oops" on the right rear quarter panel. The rust hole where the trunk floor met the quarter panel had a single blade of grass growing in it. People wanted to pluck it but I stopped them. I even put a couple drops of Miracle Grow a time or two. Wish I had a picture.

Clutch slave cylinder went bad. Drove for two months without a clutch. Shut it off at the stop light. Started it in 1st gear to get going. Parked on inclines as much as possible.

Upgraded to an immaculate charcoal gray '68 with an 1835.

............Mostly drove my dad's '52 Oldsmobile while in high school (one of my brothers still has that car). First car that I owned myself was a '63 Impala 2 dr. hardtop (283 engine with powerglide tranny) that I bought for $500 in 1970. First VW was a '67 bug bought in '72 or '73.
