ive got about £1000 to spend on a first car, i want something that wont be too steep on insurance, maybe group 8 and below, quick and easy to modify in a year or 2. it can be old or new, and no bigger than like an escort.
was thinking of getting a 205 xs, then theres a possibility of squeezing the mi16 engine in later.
all suggestions appreciated.
I've spoken to people getting very reasonable insurance on an AXGT at 17, first year driving etc. I can't remember the figures, but it was a lot cheaper than what I paid for the first year on the Ka.

Maybe an R5, and put in the GTT setup after you've gotten some no claims.
Or what about going retro with a MK1 or MK2 Escort, Talbot Samba or Sunbeam, or Vauxhaul Chevette or Viva HC Coupe, and going Pinto/Alfa/Lancia/Toyota or even V8 powered, once you've proved you aren't a total hoon (yet). :)

Not the most popular car on here. Normally owners of such cars get ripped mightily. Normally for stupid power claims.
Why not really learn to drive with rear wheel drive. Even a Seirra 1.6 can give you that for not much money, reasonably modern equipment, plenty of parts donors for DIY repair, and years, and tears of tuning experience about.
Yep buy my AX GT, its a bargain at £400. Just did Valve stems about 2 weeks ago goes well good fun, red, nice interior.

My first car was a mkII Escort. It was fun, until I stacked it on a hump back bridge :-(
I got a mkIII after that. It had more power but just wasn't the same...
