OT question on 95 Cheve S-10 blaser

My son is half way tin the middle of nowhere on I20 in GA. He has a 95 Chevie S-10 blazer. He just replace the radiator and (I think) the thermo state. Thermostat seems to be cycling.

the temp gage is running 210 to 200 and he's concerned there may be something else he needs to check. He has about 600 to 800 mile left to go on this trip (going back is not an option)

I'm thinking he needs to flush the cooling system.

Any input would be appreciated.

What thermostat did he install? If the thermostat is working correctly, the coolant temp should never go below the rating of the thermostat once the engine is warmed, so if he put a 192 thermostat in there and he's running "200 to 210" on the gauge I'd say he's right on the money.

With a new radiator a flush should not be needed. However if the block is full of crap it may very well have plugged up the new radiator. That's why you should hose everything out before you fill it back up with 50% coolant and 50% distilled water mix. Having the thermostat housing open while taking the garden hose to everything helps immensely, you can get ALL of the junk out of the cooling system that way.

Good luck with it.

I'm with Chris... the factory thermostat is a 195 F unit, if that is what he installed the temperatures he is seeing(at the gauge) are okay...

Probably air lock, he needs to bleed/vent the system. Should be a bleeder on one of the highest point of the system, or he will have to do it manually by loosen a hose clamp etc.
